The Warrumbungle Shire Council is looking to the Immigration Department for information for the steps needed to accept Syrian refugees into the shire. Shire General Manager, Steve Loane, has pointed out that the shire has all the facilities needed for resettlement of refugees as well as a need to halt the depopulation on the towns within the shire.

The suggestion came from the Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes from the 12th November and was passed in the Council’s December meeting [pdf download] with Councillor Schmidt proposing the motion and Councillor Capel seconding.

Australia has indicated it will accept 12,000 Syrian refugees from the Middle East crisis where an estimated 9 million Syrians have been displaced by war.
