Two male teenagers were killed and 3 others seriously injured when their car stuck a tree on the Newell Highway this morning just before 6am. Survivors had to be cut from the car and the most seriously injured was taken by Westpac rescue helicopter to hospital, the other two being taken by road. Police say the driver fell asleep at the wheel and the car left the road without braking. The other passenger in the front seat was killed.
The passengers were all from Victoria on their way to Queensland and had been driving for 10 hours, the dead driver had taken over 2 hours before the accident
This accident follows the death of a woman walking on the Newel Highway south of Coonabarabran. The woman was struck by a car, no charges have been laid against the driver.
Police have again asked people to drive carefully and to ensure they are well rested and driving to the conditions. The deaths bring the current holiday period road toll to 17 – the period ends January 3, 2016.
