Social media posts by local residents regarding the Pilliga fires’ proximity to CSG mines are escalating as it becomes apparent how large (over 10,000 hectares) and close the fires are.  While the fires are 30km from Narrabri and 100km from Coonabarabran, concern is mounting as people fear the nightmare of a major breakout in the Pilliga, combined with the possibility of the CSG mine being involved.

The RFS is advising there is continued containment and back burning around the 3 fires burning in the Pilliga that will cause more smoke and visibility issues on the Newell highway. At the time of writing the fire status is at “being controlled” while the RFS, NWPS and State Forests work to backburn and bulldoze containment lines.
