A major step has been taken to have the Warrumbungle National Park classified as an International Dark Sky Park. Should the application be accepted the area will become the first Dark Sky Park in Australia, a major boost to Coonabarabran’s claim of being the Astronomy Capital of Australia.
Dark Sky Parks are proving to be major tourist draw-cards globally for astronomers and astrophotographers as well the general public, many of which have never experienced a truly dark night sky.
A combination of staff from Siding Spring, local business owners, Council and interested group representatives have worked on the application which has stringent requirements for several months. The announcement on whether the application has been successful will come in April.
Should the application be successful, ongoing reports about the lighting status of the park will be submitted to ensure continuing compliance with requirements such as night darkness measurements and lighting plans.
