Police are investigating after a man was stabbed in Coonabarabran overnight.

About 12.30am today (Wednesday 28 January 2015), the 37-year-old man was walking on Castlereagh Street.

The man has told police he was attacked from behind by an unknown number of people.

He sustained a number of stab wounds.

The assailants left the scene, and the man ran into nearby Charles Street.

Witnesses heard the man calling for help, placed him in a car, and took him to Coonabarabran Hospital.

He was later transferred to Dubbo Base Hospital, where he has undergone surgery.

The man is believed to be in a serious but stable condition.

Police from Mudgee Local Area Command are investigating the incident.

They are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward by contacting Coonabarabran detectives on 68 427 299.
